Integrating Spiritual and Intellectual Life: A Comparative Study of the Seraphic Doctor, St. Bonaventure (1221-1274) and Korean Seon Master, Chinul (1158–1210)

The Catholic Tradition Lecture Series No.6

Speaker:
Yongho Francis Lee, OFM, is a Korean Franciscan friar and Assistant Professor of Systematic and Comparative Theology at the Franciscan School of Theology.

Trained at Boston College and the University of Notre Dame, Lee specializes in the dialogue between Eastern and Western religious traditions, particularly Buddhism and Franciscanism. His book, Mysticism and Intellect in Medieval Christianity and Buddhism, compares Bonaventure and Chinul. Buddhism illuminated his grasp of Franciscan spirituality, allowing him to merge his “old home” (Buddhist roots) with his “adopted home” (Christian tradition) into a new, integrated spiritual home.
